PRINCIPLE 3:

Maintain and Restore Biodiversity

Encourage the protection of significant ecosystems and restore damaged ecosystems by

  • considering the impact of design decisions and selection on ecosystems away from the site;
  • evaluating site and local ecosystems as part of the design process;
  • recommending against building in areas where development is likely to have significant negative environmental consequences;
  • maintaining and enhancing the site ecosystem, using strategies such as preserving vegetation and topsoil, and rehabilitating and restoring habitat;
  • actively promoting innovative building and development that will lead to a sustainable society.
