PRINCIPLE 7:

Raise Awareness of Environmental Issues through Education and Advocacy

by

  • raising awareness of social and ecological issues among those people whose decisions impact upon global and local ecosystems;
  • informing the building industry of the benefits of environmentally sound practice and its influence on product design, manufacture, supply and servicing;
  • advocating the role of architects in contributing to a sustainable society, and promoting and marketing architects’ skills and expertise in sustainable design;
  • encouraging architects to develop innovative and exemplary sustainable design solutions;
  • encouraging the (introduction and) use of environmentally responsible products, processes and systems;
  • assisting in the formulation of policy and the development of visions for a sustainable built environment: This is to occur through task-groups, environmental committees, and active participation in conferences and other forums;
  • promoting sustainability as a component within ideas competitions, and within the judging of NZIA Architectural Awards programmes at regional and national levels.
  • promoting the policy by participation in the legislative process, engaging in local environmental issues and advocacy at every opportunity.
